Close of the Day Prayer
Modified from the Daily Prayer for Individuals and Families in the Lutheran Service Book,
with links to appointed readings.
The sign of the cross + may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
A candle may be lighted.
In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
O almighty God, merciful Father,
I, a poor miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You
and justly deserved Your punishment both now and forever. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely
repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter
sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being.
Amen
Let my prayer rise before You as incense,
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Psalm 141:2
Joyous light of glory:
of the immortal Father;
heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ.
We have come to the setting of the sun,
and we look to the evening light.
We sing to God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
You are worthy of being praised with pure voices forever.
O Son of God, O Giver of life: the universe proclaims Your glory.
The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and peace at the last.
Amen.
It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
To herald Your love in the morning,
Your truth at the close of the
day.
Psalm 92:1-2
A hymn, canticle, or psalm may be sung or spoken.
An appointed reading or one of the following is read: Matthew 11:28-30; Micah 7:18-20;
Matthew 18:15-35; Matthew 25:1-13; Luke 11:1-13; Luke 12:13-34; Romans 8:31-39;
2 Corinthians 4:16-18; Revelation 21:22-22:5.
The Apostles Creed is confessed.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian* Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life + everlasting. Amen
Lord, now You let Your servant go in peace;
Your word has been fulfilled.
My own eyes have seen the salvation
which you have prepared in the sight of every people:
a light to reveal You to the nations
and the glory of
Your people Israel.
Luke 2:29-32
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Lord's Prayer
Prayers for ourselves and others.
Concluding Prayers:
Visit our dwellings, O Lord, and in Your great mercy defend us from all perils and
dangers of this night; for the love of Your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You
have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins
where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I
commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with
me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Then go to sleep at once and in good cheer.
